Beyonce on the cover of Self magazine
Aug 20th, 2010 by Bilal Ali
In this September 2010 issue, she addresses her philanthropy, her motivation, and how anyone can make a difference. A few quotes from her cover story:
On her reason for charity work
Beyonce: “I’ve always felt that you should give because it’s what you can do to help. You don’t do it to get praised. For a long time, being quiet about what I did was a conscious decision. When you look around at all that’s wrong in the world, the need to do something, no matter how big or how small, is clear.”
On what motivates her
Beyonce: “Sisterhood means everything to me. All the charities I’m involved with are special, but I find any organization that focuses on women and children really motivating. GEMS and the young ladies the nonprofit helps are very close to my heart. And what I took away from the clients at Phoenix House changed my life. These were real people who touched me so much that I had to go beyond making a donation. They’re gaining skills at the Cosmetology Center, which will help them earn a living and find their way out of substance abuse—it’s a testament to the possibility of second chances.”
On how anyone can make a difference
Beyonce: “Think about what truly touches you and motivates you to help, then start locally. Once it’s in your heart to give, you’ll have to follow through. I am a happy woman—very happy—because I know that I’ve worked hard, and I love being able to give back“.”
She has been accused of stealing one of her new Dereon leggings designs (above) from Iceland’s E-Label shop.
The craziest part is, the designer was told Beyonce indeed purchased a pair of the E-Label leggings from a TopShop in London. In ads for her new Dereon line, she is seen wearing the leggings in question, and one of the owners of E-Label noticed it.
Heba Hallgrimsdottir, one of the owners, said “This is naturally huge and I am still half in shock. I didn’t [recognize] straight away that this was her own label: I just thought she was wearing our leggings. It is practically just copy/paste,”
E-Label’s leggings design isn’t copyrighted but they believe the large coverage of Beyonce’s purchase will be enough to prove plagiarism. The Icelandic clothing label isn’t sure if they will sue saying, “I have only just heard about this and no decision has yet been taken. We need to inspect her brand’s trousers closer because, according to law, it is not copied if a certain number of things have been changed from the original design“
