Free agent West suspended 10 games for weapons charges

Aug 20th, 2010 by Bilal Ali

Free agent guard Delonte West has been suspended 10 games without pay after pleading guilty to weapons charges, the NBA said on Friday.

The NBA said West, who spent the last three seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, pleaded guilty last month to carrying a concealed weapon and wearing, carrying, and transporting a handgun, in violation of Maryland law.

West was arrested last September for a traffic violation and police discovered he was carrying a variety of weapons. He was sentenced, as part of his plea bargain, to home detention that would not interfere with his NBA career.

If West signs a contract to play again in the NBA, the league said his suspension will begin with the first game of the season for which he is able to play.

The 27-year-old West, who averaged 8.8 points per game last season with the Cavaliers, was traded to the Timberwolves in July but the team waived him earlier this month.
