A 6-month-old girl has died a day after she and her father were shot in a parked minivan on Chicago’s South Side, a Chicago hospital spokesman said.
The girl and her 28-year-old father were sitting in the front seat of their minivan when someone shot them shortly before 1 p.m. Monday, Chicago police Officer Mike Sullivan said.
Jonylah Watkins died Tuesday morning of her gunshot wounds, Corner Children’s Hospital spokesman Mike McHugh said.
The father was taken to Northwestern Hospital in serious to critical condition, according to police.
Police said it appears the father was the target of the shooters.
“It was very clear that whoever was doing this was firing at the father, and exclusively at the father, who happened to be sitting in a minivan with the child,” Chicago police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said Tuesday.
Police are investigating the shooting. The shooter fled the scene in a blue van, police said.
