Dec 4th, 2009 by Bilal Ali
A little more than two years after offering a live CD, smooth jazz guitarist Brian Hughes is now making a live DVD available. No Reservations was filmed and recorded during a performance at Spaghettini Grill & Jazz Club in Seal Beach, Calif.
The 13-song project features titles such as “While The World Slowly Turns,” “Shaken Not Stirred,” “Omaha Unbound,” “Along the Way,” “For You” and “Endless Road.” There is also a cover of “Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers,” a song written by Stevie Wonder and made famous as an instrumental by guitarist Jeff Beck.
Joining Hughes in his band are Tal Bergman on drums, Ron Powell on percussion, Rufus Philpot on bass and Dennis Hamm on piano and keyboards. The DVD is produced and director by Eric Winter.
Hughes explains that the story behind the song “Omaha Unbound,” which he performs on the live DVD, was that is was written after a fan wrote him to say that his music gave him hope. “I got an e-mail from a fan one day and it was just incredibly touching. It just brought me to tears. He explained the rough life he’d had, and that he’d been to Vietnam. I found that very touching, and that’s where that song comes from.”
