Obama Winds Down His Vacation with a Push Back at the RNC

Sen. Barack Obama is coming off his Hawaii vacation to face a busy few weeks ahead: he is likely to announce his vice presidential running mate in the eight days left until the Democratic convention, then get in some more campaigning before flying to Denver and giving his acceptance speech on Aug. 28.
But first, at the end of his trip, Obama got in some bodysurfing. He also honored his deceased mother by tossing a white lei into the sea. At another point, Obama visited the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor with his wife, Michelle, and their two daughters.
Obama held a fundraiser during his Hawaii stay, pulling in about $1.3 million, his campaign said. He took his family and some friends snorkeling at Hanauma Bay. Almost every day while Obama was gone, the Republican National Committee tracked his movements in an e-mail titled the “Updated Obama Travel Guide” — mocking his two-hour basketball game, his picnic under a banyan tree, his rental of a large, oceanfront vacation home. The implication was that his was no ordinary American vacation.
On Friday, the Obama campaign hit back with a mocking e-mail of its own. “Breaking News Alert — RNC attacks hamburgers, moviegoers and ice cream cones! Puppies and kittens feared to be next!” the press release said. Listing a few examples of the Republican committee’s e-mails, it continued: “Apparently the folks at the RNC don’t like eating cheeseburgers or ice cream with their families, and are not among the millions of Americans who enjoyed Batman.” Obama was expected to return to the mainland on Friday, and to attend an event at Saddleback Church in California over the weekend.
