Former beauty queen pleads guilty but argues with judge

Dec 8th, 2009 by Bilal Ali

A former beauty queen and law student accused of kidnapping and torturing her ex-boyfriend for more than 8 hours, plead guilty Tuesday in Pima County Superior Court.

After arriving 45 minutes late, Kumari Fulbright pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit kidnapping.

Fulbright and three men are accused of tying up a 24 year old man on December 8, 2007, and holding him captive.

News4 had a crew in the courtroom during the hearing.

When Kumari’s attorney finished reading her guilty plea, the Judge turned to Kumari and asked, “Do you agree with what your attorney says Ms. Fulbright.”

“Absolutely not,” she responded.

“I can’t allow you to plead guilty. What part or parts don’t you agree with,” the judge replied.

The judge then repeated numerous passages from the plea and asked Kumari if she agreed with them. For each factual issue Kumari seemed reluctant to admit that she was involved, instead choosing to state that she agrees with “what’s in the plea.”

“I signed [the plea] so, I think I can read and write and understand English when I signed it so,” she stated.

Fulbright’s attorney, Stephen Weiss, said even though Fulbright didn’t agree with all the details, taking the plea was the best option.

“The facts that I recited were the facts that the state could prove and so that forms the factual basis,” Weiss said. “She didn’t necessarily completely agree 100 percent with all of that.”

Weiss said a trial could have landed Fulbright a minimum of seven years in prison.

“The downside risk of going to trial in this case is really really significant,” Fulbright said.

Following the plea, Fulbright was taken into custody.Sentencing is set for March 1st. She faces up to 2 years in jail for aggravated assault and up to 7 years probation for conspiracy to commit kidnapping.
