John Legend Reflects On Barack Obama’s Big Moment For Newsweek
Nov 15th, 2009 by Bilal Ali
Newsweek magazine, in its current issue dated November 16 on newsstands now, has selected the decade’s biggest moments with the the help of some of the world’s biggest names. That includes John Legend, who was asked to contribute to Newsweek’s list of the Top Ten Most Important Dates. Legend chose November 4, 2008, the day that Barack Obama was elected president of the United States.
“Deep down, I knew it would happen,” Legend writes in an excerpt published in the magazine. “I spent the day excited, optimistic, and a little anxious. And then, as my band and I watched the results come in, President Obama’s victory was announced and the champagne flowed. Tears flowed too, of happiness, relief, ecstasy, pride. I was immensely proud to be American. Proud that Americans had united in a way I had never experienced. We had come together after 9/11, of course, but bonding optimistically over our future was a lot better than doing so over grief and shock.”
Coming in at No. 1 on the list was the attacks of September 11, while No. 2 was the Supreme Court’s order to end the recount in Bush v. Gore. Obama’s election is No. 3.
