Grammy Award winning artist Alicia Keys talked to NBC’s Lester Holt on Tuesday (November 10) night’s broadcast of Nightly News With Brian Williams about her determination to be “a voice for the voiceless” through her Keep a Child Alive foundation. The foundation provides life-saving treatment, care and support to families affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India. Keys talked about a trip to Africa, where she saw first-hand that many are not able to afford drugs that could possibly keep them alive. This devastating disease has created more than 13 million orphans in Africa alone.
It was back in 2005, on World AIDS Day, that Keys announced that she has recorded a benefit song called “Don’t Give Up (Africa)” with Bono of U2. Keys and Bono donated all proceeds of the song’s sales to her foundation. In 2008, a portion of a documentary focusing Keys was shown during American Idol’s “Idol Gives Back,” a charity drive for underprivileged children. The documentary, Alicia in Africa: Journey to the Motherland, showed her month-long trip to Africa to visit communities affected by HIV and AIDS.
